Para-Amino Benzoic Acid: Known as PABA, is a micro-nutrient and antioxidant. Primarily functions in mopping-up free radicals, which some studies have associates with the aging process. PABA helps the body form erythrocytes, red blood cells which carry oxygen throughout the body.
PABA also helps to improve the body’s use of proteins and maintains intestinal flora. It assists in the production of folic acid. Its benefits are further enhanced when it is taken in combination with vitamin C and the other group B vitamins.
PABA may reduce fatigue and limit the effects of depression, and reduce the inflammatory effects of osteoarthritis. PABA may lessen wrinkles and improve skin tone as we age, and restore gray hair to its original color. It also helps with hair growth and improves skin pigmentation.
PABA deficiencies do occur, and are exhibited by depression, fatigue, irritability, nervousness, constipation, weeping eczema and/or patchy skin. Sunscreens that have a SPF over 8 may reduce the body’s ability to make Vitamin D.
A diet including liver, molasses, whole grains, mushrooms and spinach will normally prevent a PABA deficiency; intestinal bacteria sometimes make the nutrient as well. |
